Fred Owens Jr., born on July 2, 1953, in Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024 at Georgetown Hospital. Fred was a quiet guy with an exuberant presence, he retired as a dedicated supervisor for the United States Postal Service, and is remembered fondly by is co-workers as hardworking and fun.
A graduate of Eastern High School, avid basketball and occasional football player. Fred’s sports love was tennis from early on. He has played and coached all over the DMV up and until he took ill. He had dozens of loyal students who affectionately called him “Coach Fred” or “The Tennis Doctor”. His regular on court motivation was “deep balls kill, short balls get you killed” and only Fred can explain that, in his own humorous way. His students got it and understood it came from a place of love for them and the sport.
In addition to his commitment to tennis, Fred enjoyed visiting friends, traveling down South, eating good soul food and deserts. He also enjoyed attending music festivals and movies. In his family he was always the first one to see a new movies and wouldn’t tell the story. He had a unique sense of style starting with his signature afro back in the day to his Adidas sweat suits complemented by the sweat bands around his wrist. His vibrant personality created a memorable impression on everyone he encountered.
Fred is survived by his siblings, Alvenia Marcella Barlow, Mark Craig Owens, Marsha Owens, and Donnell Owens, and long term girlfriend Karin Coleman. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise Ashmon-Owens. He goes home to be with his father, Fred Owens Sr., and his mother, Estelle Mae Owens.
Though he is no longer with us, Fred Owens' spirit and passions will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege to know him. Forever the son, brother, friend and Coach rest easy Fred.
