Richard Edward Butler
Richard Edward Butler, a generous figure in his community and cherished family man, passed away on November 5, 2024, in Washington, DC. Born on September 6, 1946, in Bryantown, Maryland, Richard lived a life filled with passion, creativity, and an undying love for music.
Richard considered himself a true Artist. In fact, he was a trifecta of creation: a Culinary Artist, a Painter, and a Master Musician. Richard began his professional journey as a proud veteran, where he served honorably in the United States Army as a Chef. He would tell stories about how he could lift the spirits of the entire platoon by preparing them a one-of-a-kind meal, made with love. He carried the hardworking values of service and appreciation for preparing fine cuisine with him throughout his life, creating a legacy of "Richard favorites," such as his slow simmered spaghetti or veggie baked beans.
Following his military service, Richard embarked on a long and rewarding career as a Painter for the Board of Education. While there, he unintentionally became an advocate for racial equality. Like many at the time, he was one of the first people of color in his department. He pushed back against racial discrimination with hard work and a skilled hand to become a highly valued asset. Once retired, he fondly remembered the countless Principals and Superintendents who may have started out doubting his ability, but in the end, became his friends, personally requesting his assistance and commending him on a job well done!
However, it was in music that Richard truly found his calling. A talented musician, who even found his wife in a band, he sang and played several instruments with various local bands in Southern Maryland, delighting audiences with his renditions of Southern Soul and Oldies but Goodies. Music was more than a hobby for Richard; it was a way to connect with others, and many can attest to witnessing him in lively nightclubs, either strumming his guitar or socializing gleefully with friends.
His journey was important, but Richard’s family was paramount in his life! He is preceded in death by his father, William Butler, his stepfather, Benjamin Butler “Bennie”, his beloved and cherished mother, Mary Alice Butler, whom he honored by growing and preserving her legacy for future generations, his sister, Lucille Barber, and his brothers: Francis “Motown” Butler, and Robert Butler, with whom he shared many joyful moments.
Richard Butler leaves behind many more. He was the proud father and provider to an army of daughters: Eboney Butler, Richelle Payne (Terry), Dawn Butler, Kadijah Butler, Rasheeha Butler, and Shanell Butler. He often doted over his grandchildren: Karis, LeeAnn, Ramoni, Kailey, Khaleesi, and Ju'bry. He took immense pride in watching his grandchildren thrive.
Richard’s family also includes his brother, John "Billy" Butler, and his sisters: Doris Ann Marvel, Theresa Mitchell (John), Pauline Butler, and Mary Butler "Rose." Although we all know relationships with siblings can sometimes get bumpy, he shared precious memories of life and laughter with each one of them.
Remembered for his generosity and love for music, Richard’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his loved ones. Friends and family are invited to join in a Celebration of Life in honor of Richard on November 24, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Lamont's Nightclub in Indian Head, MD. Attire is semi-formal/dress to impress. There will be a "Notes & Memories to Richard" box, as well as a place to leave cards for his family. This gathering will not only celebrate the life he lived but also the many connections he forged in his time with us.
Richard Edward Butler will be missed deeply, but his spirit will undoubtedly continue to resonate through the music he loved and the cherished memories held by those he touched.
